How we compare
This page sets out the rules every comparison on this site follows. The first one is the software price table. If a page breaks these rules, that is our mistake and we will fix it.
General information only, not tax advice. Check GOV.UK or ask a qualified adviser about your situation.
What we use
- Vendor pricing and feature pages, as they appear on the day we check.
- HMRC's official guidance on choosing software for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, and the official list of compatible software it points to.
- Dates and rules from GOV.UK.
What we do not do
- We do not claim hands-on testing. We compare published information, not our own trials.
- We do not use reviews we cannot verify, or invent ratings.
- We do not use HMRC logos or branding.
- We do not say software is "approved by HMRC". We say whether it appears in HMRC's official list, with a link, and the date we checked.
On every comparison page
- A "last checked" date.
- The sources we used, with links.
- Prices marked as with or without VAT, and dated.
- Affiliate links marked clearly. See the affiliate disclosure.
How we choose what to list and in what order
The price table does not rank products and recommends none; it lists published prices only. Criteria for any ranked list will be published here before that list goes live. Ranking will be based on those criteria, such as listing in HMRC's official list, published price, and features the vendor states publicly. We do not accept payment for placement, ranking or reviews; whether a vendor pays us is not a ranking criterion.
Keeping pages current
We aim to recheck prices and terms monthly. A page not rechecked for more than 90 days is out of date, and we will say so on it.
